<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RonpcGGN5rI/AAAAAAAACH4/leKEDHBLnHQ/s1600/DSCN1597.detail.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082850323346613938" />

Where the craftsman works with great care, Jivya Soma Mashe lets erupt his line on the canvas. The example of the fishnet, one of the emblematic works of the artist, is characteristic of his way of painting, or more exactly his way of living the painting.

The fishnet is represented by thousands of small circles clinging to each other. There is no realistic application in the drawing. Each of these circles is significantly different from one another. The same gesture, endlessly repeated so that these thousands of small circles associate to form a net, do not seem to cause tiredness to the artist, the gesture is never frozen nor tensed by the visible length of the exercise.

On the contrary! The more it is repeated, the more it comes to life. The endless repetition gives life that catches the eye. The act of painting becomes a visual psalmody. Jivya Soma Mashe's pictorial approach, repetitive but never the same, either for the work process of this fishnet, or for its many Warli scenes, is surprisingly similar to the Ragas melodic frame.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RtlZAUqKuYI/AAAAAAAACO0/ANli1YbRl6Q/s1600/aP1000856.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105209514681612674" />

The extremely rudimentary visual representation in their wall paintings is constructed around a graphic vocabulary, more basic than which it is hard to get: circle, triangle and square. The circle and triangle issue from the Warli's observation of nature--the circle from their observation of the moon and the sun, and the triangle from their observation of mountains (and more specifically the sacred mountain with its sharp, pointed peak) and trees with their tops thrusting skywards. It is just the square that does not seem to come from any observation of nature; rather, it appears to be a human creation, designed to bound the sacred enclosure--the plot of land.

The bodies of human beings, like those of many kinds of animals, are depicted by means of two triangles, one upside down, whose respective tips touch. The upper triangle represents the torso, the lower one the pelvis. The precarious balance of these triangles symbolizes the equilibrium of the world, and the couple. This equilibrium also has the practical and larksome aspect of being easily capable of animating bodies. It is an equilibrium without which the art of Warli painters would be utterly devoid of rhythm and life.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RtlZFEqKuZI/AAAAAAAACO8/IJITxTy2ZQE/s1600/aP1000854.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105209596285991314" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; In his paintings, walking is also included in the form of tracks, usually represented by a lone line. One or more lines, running across and structuring the canvas, invite us to follow his ever-moving figures, his "walkers" whose bold, rudimentary forms conjure up the likewise rudimentary and resolute silhouettes of other famous "walkers" represented, or depicted, by Alberto Giacometti, Charlie Chaplin, and Jacques Tati.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RooE32GN51I/AAAAAAAACJI/ukwcHVLy8Bo/s1600/JIVYAD~6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082880486901933906" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RojoaWGN44I/AAAAAAAACBk/y2SyaBChImA/s1600/detail2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082567718793503618" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RojoVmGN43I/AAAAAAAACBc/xRFvQ2Ca3I8/s1600/12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082567637189124978" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RojoQmGN42I/AAAAAAAACBU/0xiUbLpz5t0/s1600/11.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082567551289779042" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RojoM2GN41I/AAAAAAAACBM/kekqE4yA9kQ/s1600/10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082567486865269586" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RvZ6wc-c0CI/AAAAAAAACPk/w2LUPw0AEs8/s1600/long+mashe+milano.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113409399756214306" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RojoJWGN40I/AAAAAAAACBE/TVqSZKeTkXo/s1600/8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082567426735727426" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_cVi-od2KwJg/RojoFWGN4zI/AAAAAAAACA8/6VSaXEuLKfg/s1600/2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082567358016250674" />

If you have informations about Jivya Soma Mashe and Warli tribe (biography, bibliography, photos, films or videos, etc.) please contact me :

Herve Perdriolle

Photos, texte and paintings Hervé Perdriolle
